Med-Or holds a seminar by ISS-Africa on G20 summit and Africa's Challenges

Jakkie Cilliers, the founder of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), holds a seminar at the Med-Or Foundation. The meeting focused on the key challenges facing Africa in relation to Energy, Climate Change, and Development.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the Med-Or Italian Foundation organized a workshop titled "Towards the G20 in South Africa – Africa’s Major Challenges in Energy, Climate Change, and Development Potential". The event featured Jakkie Cilliers, Founder of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Africa and Head of the African Futures and Innovation (AFI) Programme.

During the workshop, participants examined key challenges that the African continent is expected to encounter in the near future, with a particular emphasis on energy, climate change, and economic development.

Cilliers presented findings from three research papers produced by the ISS, highlighting the necessity for innovative approaches to address Africa's surging energy demands. He called for increased investment in renewable energy, where the continent has the potential to emerge as a global leader, due to its abundant natural resources, including solar and wind.

The discussion also delved into climate change, examining the destructive impacts of global warming, particularly in relation to extreme weather events that disproportiontely affect Africa's most vulnerable populations. Cilliers underscored the urgent need for coordinated global efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, alongside the development of adaptive strategies to safeguard the continent’s economies.

Finally, the conversation shifted to Africa’s position within the global landscape, focusing on how the continent can address international challenges and enhance its economic and political clout worldwide.

The research documents provided an overview of long-term policies and strategies aimed at tackling these pressing issues.

The ISS, a prominent think tank in Africa specializing in security, governance, and development, has established a partnership with the Med-Or Italian Foundation through a signed MoU. The ISS has offices located in Pretoria (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and Dakar (Senegal).
